ATTORNEY RECRUITMENT
To serve the needs of our clients, Masuda Funai seeks to recruit and retain lawyers of the highest caliber. Most of our lawyers have graduated toward the top of their respective law school classes and have otherwise demonstrated academic excellence, such as through participation in law review, moot court or other programs of distinction.

To work with our diverse and dynamic client base, Masuda Funai seeks lawyers from diverse backgrounds, including lawyers experienced in dealing with foreign cultures or languages.

Firm Culture
Masuda Funai prides itself on its unique culture. We emphasize a balance between work and quality of life. Understanding the demands of family and work, the Firm sets reasonable billing goals for all lawyers. We believe this approach benefits our clients and our Firm. These factors and others have contributed to the Firm being listed in America's Greatest Places To Work With A Law Degree.

Professional Development
The Firm emphasizes the professional development of all of its lawyers, especially its Associate Attorneys. All new Associates are paired with at least one mentor, typically a senior Principal in the Firm. As we firmly believe the practice of law is built around developing relationships with our clients, we encourage and facilitate direct client contact for lawyers at all levels.

Lawyers at Masuda Funai receive training though a combination of “hands on" experiences and continuing legal education provided by the Firm. For instance, new lawyers with an interest in litigation will quickly find themselves in the courtroom, while transactional lawyers will quickly find themselves in the middle of a deal. The Firm and its various substantive Practice Groups regularly sponsor in-house training and legal education programs for lawyers. Masuda Funai also encourages all of its lawyers to actively participate in bar association activities as well as external continuing legal education programs.

SUMMER ASSOCIATE PROGRAM
The Summer Associate Program at Masuda Funai is an integral part of our recruiting efforts. We hire most - but not all - of our first-year Associates from this program. Traditionally, we have made offers to a high percentage of Summer Associate Program participants. Summer Associates work out of the Firm’s downtown Chicago office.

Assignments
The Summer Program is designed to expose law students to as much of the Firm’s practice as possible. Summer Associates work with lawyers in all Practice Groups and at all levels, including the Firm’s senior Principals. Summer Associates who already have an interest in a particular practice area may request assignments geared to that interest.

Participants are not limited to performing legal research and "behind the scenes work." On the contrary, the assignments involve "real-life" client issues, and, where appropriate, Summer Associates are encouraged to work on matters involving client contact.

Each Summer Associate is assigned a mentor, who oversees the Summer Associate’s workflow and provides guidance during the Program.  The Firm tries to provide each Summer Associate with a positive, realistic experience.

After Hours
Of course, the Summer Associate Program also involves a variety of social functions to allow Summer Associates and Firm lawyers to become better acquainted outside of the office. Summer Associates from out-of-state are provided opportunities to become acquainted with Chicago and its many attributes, including social and cultural events.
